To help build and maintain networking connections in arts and health, MAIHN is shifting to a monthly, hour-long format on the third Thursdays of every month. Hennepin County Medical Center in downtown Minneapolis has agreed to host the odd-numbered months--January, March, May, etc. (Bethesda Hospital's Gallery Cafe in Saint Paul will host MAIHN meetings in the even-numbered months--February, April, June, etc.)

This past year, the officers have been studying the effectiveness of the current infrastructure and have concluded that it no longer best serves MAIHN’s purpose as a networking group. As a result, MAIHN will transition to a less formal structure after November 20, 2014.

We are looking for a volunteer willing to create and moderate a Facebook or Google Group for the Midwest Arts and Health Network. As thanks, you will receive a complimentary one-year individual membership to the Arts & Health Alliance (a $140 value). If you are interested in moderating this group, please email as soon as possible. 

MAIHN is an all-volunteer organization and depends on members who are willing to share their time and talents. Please consider a nomination for the role of the Co-Chair or the Communications Director at the MAIHN meeting on September 18th.

At the September meeting of each year, individuals will submit their own name or the name of another member for open positions.  Members will be notified of nominees via a MAIHN email.  Voting will take place at the November meeting each year.  Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of members present at November meeting to serve a two-year term.

Duties of the Co-chairs:

• Set agenda, coordinate site and arrange presenters for bi-monthly MAIHN meetings
• Chair bi-monthly MAIHN meetings
• Coordinate MAIHN activities
• Serve as liaisons to public and the Global Alliance for Arts and Health

Duties of the Communications Director

• Supervise access to website and listserv
• Moderator for website and listserv
• Respond to emails sent to MAIHN website

Presentation: Artist Panel Discussion on Abstract Artwork in Healthcare Settings

Join MAIHN on Thursday, September 18, for a lively discussion about artwork being created and placed in healthcare settings. What evidence-based design has found in research, and how the “nature rule” is effecting what artists are creating, if at all? Are the studies telling the whole story? What other examples of collections in existence may we reference and look at to model? What are the differences that may need to be considered; urban vs. rural, government vs. private, ages, economics, specialty units, ethnicity, and more.

The Regional Arts in Healthcare Symposium is currently accepting presentation abstracts and has extended the deadline through September 19, 2014.

The symposium will be held November 16 - 17, 2014 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. It is designed to engage artists and healthcare providers who have an interest in building or expanding an arts and health practice.

Presentation proposals should focus on the central idea, “Arts in Health: Patients, Providers and the Community.” Presenters are encouraged to submit abstracts detailing innovative and unique arts in health programs which demonstrate the value to patients of engaging with art, or the value to providers of engaging with art in their personal lives and in their practice.

Possible areas for presentation include but are not limited to

• the value of engaging patients with bedside arts programs, music, dance or theatre performance in hospital public spaces, and hospital art collections
• new research models to measure the value of arts programming in healthcare settings
• integrating arts in health/health humanities in medical education
• narrative and storytelling as tools for improved patient communications
• arts as a tool for avoiding burnout in medical training and practice
• arts as a way for caregivers to take care of themselves
• arts as a method for improving community health
